Disciples Peace Fellowship calls
Rev. Sarah Zuniga as
next Mission Director!
Disciples Peace Fellowship (DPF) is overjoyed to announce that the Rev. Sarah Zuniga will serve as the next DPF Mission Director!
“Rev. Zuniga understands the centrality of peace to the gospel of Jesus and is passionate about helping the Disciples of Christ connect peace and justice issues to their faith. The Search team and the broader Executive Committee are enthusiastic about Sarah’s new role with DPF,” said Timothy Murphy, who is the co-moderator of DPF and served on its search team.
Sarah will continue to serve as Associate Minister for Outreach & Growth at Allisonville Christian Church in Indianapolis, Indiana in addition to serving DPF as Mission Director. Allisonville Christian Church has been a key partner to DPF and the Peace Intern Program, serving as the Home Base for Training Week for decades.
“Rev. Sarah Zuniga knows the life-transforming power of the Peace Intern Program better than just about anyone,” said outgoing Mission Director Brian Frederick-Gray. “As the Peace Intern Chaplain for the last several years, a Core Trainer during Training Week, and a previous Co-Moderator for the DPF Executive Committee they have the experience, skills, relationships, strategic vision, and good graces to lead DPF into the future.”
Sarah attended Eureka College as a Reagan Fellow, and it was during their time at Eureka that they learned about the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Sarah started attending Eureka Christian Church with college friends, and it was at ECC that Sarah first started to encounter folks who encouraged a call to ministry. Sarah ignored this call for several years.
After graduating Eureka, Sarah first served DPF as a Peace Intern in the summer of 2018, alongside Jasmine Morse and Grace Hill and guided by then-Mission Director Phoebe Spier. It was during Sarah’s Peace Intern summer that they stopped ignoring a call to ministry. In addition to leading workshops and discussions on a variety of peace and justice topics that summer, Sarah used their Peace Intern summer to learn from clergy and other church leaders about their ministry journeys, and finally discerned their call to ministry. Two days before beginning classes at the University of Chicago Divinity School, Sarah switched degree programs so they could pursue an M.Div.
In 2019, Sarah began serving DPF under the leadership of current Mission Director Rev. Brian Frederick-Gray, when Sarah was asked to lead a session during closing retreat. In 2021, Sarah was called to serve on DPF’s Executive Committee, and by the following year, Sarah was a regular presenter during Training Week. In addition to helping equip Peace Interns for their summers, Sarah served as Peace Intern Chaplain starting in 2023, and provided spiritual and emotional support for the past few cohorts of interns.
“Disciples Peace Fellowship has nurtured several generations of leaders who embody peace and justice within the Church and throughout the world,” said Sarah. “I’m grateful to continue carrying on this work alongside DPF’s friends and supporters and with the help of God.”
